Splitwise Expands Pay by Bank to France, Germany, and Austria with Tink

The bill-sharing and expense app Splitwise is expanding its partnership with Tink, a Visa solution, to roll out its Pay by Bank open banking feature across Europe. Following a successful launch in the UK, the service will now be available to Splitwise users in France, Germany, and Austria.

The expansion allows users in these new markets to send money to friends and family instantly and securely from directly within the Splitwise app, using Tink’s open banking technology.

Building on UK momentum

The European rollout builds on strong momentum from the partnership’s launch in the UK. Splitwise reported a 150 per cent increase in Tink account checks and payment initiations (PIS) through its app so far this year.

Prior to the integration, users settling debts on Splitwise had to exit the app and manually initiate a payment through their separate online banking app. With the new feature, users can link their bank account directly within the Splitwise app and complete a payment in just a few clicks.

The move comes as open banking adoption continues to grow globally. The announcement cited research from Juniper Research, which found that the total number of open banking users worldwide is expected to reach over 645 million in 2029, a significant increase from 183 million in 2025.

The Pay by Bank solution is an account-to-account (A2A) payment method that allows users to authenticate and pay directly from their bank account without the need for manual data entry or multiple redirects.

Jonathan Bittner, chief executive officer and co-founder of Splitwise, commented on the expansion: “We pride ourselves in making the Splitwise user experience as secure and direct as possible. With Tink’s open banking technology, we are able to do just that. And after the success of the partnership in the UK, I’m thrilled that we can bring this feature to our users in France, Germany, and Austria.”

Ian Morrin, head of payments at Tink, added: “Splitwise is a useful tool for users to take control of their finances, and a convenient way for consumers to manage their money and stay on top of who owes who what. We’ve had a great response in the UK after partnering last year, increasing the number of Tink account checks and PIS transactions on the app by 150% since the start of this year. We are excited to build on that working relationship with Splitwise by expanding into more markets across Europe.”
