Equals Money | Railsr has partnered with identity and access management specialist Okta as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in FinTech operations and modern payment workflows.
Equals Money processes around $50bn in payments each year, with the majority of that volume moving through its API-driven, embedded finance infrastructure.
This technology enables B2B2X customers to integrate payments directly into their platforms, increasingly supported by AI-powered tools and autonomous agents.
As AI adoption accelerates, Equals Money | Railsr has focused on ensuring that innovation does not come at the expense of security, particularly as cross-border payments become more exposed to sophisticated, AI-enabled threat actors. For the past 16 months, the company has relied on Okta and its Auth0 platform to underpin this approach.
In financial services, identity and access management has emerged as a critical control layer for overseeing both human users and AI-driven activity.
Account takeover remains one of the most persistent risks facing payment providers, with AI dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for attackers. Phishing sites and fake login pages that once took days to build can now be replicated in minutes, while advanced attack techniques are increasingly accessible to non-specialists. At the same time, many organisations are seeing the rise of so-called “shadow AI”, as employees experiment with new AI tools outside formal governance structures, mirroring earlier challenges associated with shadow IT.
Alongside these human-centric risks, AI agents are beginning to play a more active role in operational processes such as onboarding, booking and payments. Unlike traditional automation, these agents are capable of making decisions and adapting to new inputs, increasing the need for robust governance, oversight and behavioural monitoring. For payment providers, this means being able to distinguish between legitimate activity and anomalous behaviour without introducing friction that slows innovation.
Equals Money | Railsr uses Auth0 to manage customer identity, while the Okta platform supports workforce identity, access management and AI governance across internal systems.
Capabilities include behavioural monitoring to identify unusual login patterns, role-based access controls that limit employee permissions, visibility into unapproved AI tools, and secure authentication methods such as passkeys and multi-factor authentication designed to be accessible to users with varying levels of technical expertise.
James Simcox, chief operations and product officer at Equals Money | Railsr, said, “At Equals we want to focus on building and innovating faster, more seamless financial products, while keeping our customers’ accounts safe. To do this, we need to defend against AI-powered threat actors while still helping someone’s grandmother log in.
“Agents will soon be taking part in the payment journey. You’ll book a holiday by asking an agent to find flights and hotels and pay automatically. But this opportunity comes with new risks. We have to be ready.”
“Okta gives us the guardrails to achieve all of this. We’ve also rolled out Okta to our staff. Having both products integrated helps us manage interactions across the whole ecosystem.”
