London Stock Exchange Partners with Payward to Launch Tokenized Public Equity Architecture

In a monumental convergence between traditional capital markets and digital-native infrastructure, the London Stock Exchange (LSE) plans to launch UK tokenized equity structures. To accelerate the initiative, the exchange has entered a strategic partnership with Payward, a unified financial infrastructure platform and parent company to global digital asset platforms, to explore how regulated market infrastructure can integrate with on-chain distribution networks.

The initiative aims to create a rights-preserving framework for tokenized public equities. By broadening investor access and providing corporate issuers with innovative routes to capital, the structure preserves the core shareholder rights, legal protections, and corporate governance standards that underpin contemporary public markets. The settlement and asset servicing mechanics will be powered by LSEG’s Digital Securities Depository (LSEG DSD), subject to pending regulatory approvals.

Building 24/7 Digital Market Infrastructure

The partnership forms a vital component of LSEG’s broader mandate to modernize international market infrastructure through its digital transformation roadmap. The tokenized equity structure will connect directly into two recently unveiled LSEG technical engines:

  • LSE 24: LSEG’s 24-hour trading venue designed to support continuous, round-the-clock trading.

  • Digital Securities Depository (LSEG DSD): The exchange’s dedicated settlement and servicing infrastructure engineered specifically to support the issuance, recording, transfer, and asset servicing of digital securities within a fully regulated framework.

  • Digital Settlement House (LSEG DiSH): An open-access platform enabling instantaneous, programmatic settlement across independent on-chain and off-chain payment networks. Utilizing commercial bank deposits held on the DiSH ledger (DiSH Cash), the engine provides a real cash leg for multi-currency FX and digital asset transactions.

Through its alliance with Payward, the LSE will explore how wallet-based interactions, digital-native access, and partner custody systems can connect with the exchange’s regulated ecosystem. This framework allows issuers and investors to utilize public and private blockchains while satisfying strict Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and operational resilience mandates.

Introducing xStocks to Public Markets

As a key milestone of the collaboration, the London Stock Exchange intends to list and start trading xStocks on LSE 24 beginning in 2027, subject to regulatory clearance.

xStocks operate as 1:1 backed tokenized representations of publicly traded shares. While tracking the exact performance of the underlying equity security, xStocks introduce the speed, programmability, and continuous access of distributed ledgers. Unlike traditional equities locked within legacy brokerage accounts, xStocks can move fluidly between centralized exchanges, self-custodied Web3 wallets, and authorized on-chain applications.

“Tokenisation has the potential to change how investors access, and how issuers use, financial markets, but it must develop in a way that preserves the trust, rights and role of regulated markets,” stated Julia Hoggett, CEO of LSE plc and head of digital and securities markets, LSEG. “By working with Payward, and continuing to collaborate across the market infrastructure ecosystem, we are exploring how issuers and investors can benefit from new forms of access while maintaining the standards that underpin public markets.”

Unfacing the TradFi and Crypto Divide

The joint venture highlights a permanent shift away from the legacy assumption that public capital markets and blockchain networks operate in opposition. By deploying tokenized equities on shared institutional rails, the alliance establishes a scalable model for cross-border asset mobility.

“For years the assumption was that crypto and traditional finance were on a collision course, and one of them would have to lose. That was never the real story. The real opportunity is what happens when they run on the same rails,” added Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Payward. “Bringing London-listed companies onchain as xStocks is the start of that, demonstrating how investors can access public markets in new ways… Doing this with an institution the calibre of the London Stock Exchange is what turns that vision from an idea into lasting market infrastructure.”
