OakNorth Bank has launched its first Junior Cash ISA (JISA), carrying a 3.5% AER rate and marking the digital bank’s first product designed for under-18s in its 11-year history. The account opens from £1, accepts transfers from existing JISAs held elsewhere without affecting the annual allowance, and is available to children aged 14 and under at launch. Deposits are locked until the child turns 18, with FSCS protection up to £120,000.
The bank, which says it holds more than £7bn in deposits from around 250,000 adult savers, is framing the JISA as a natural extension of an established savings franchise rather than a diversification into unfamiliar territory. OakNorth already offers an Easy Access Cash ISA and a Fixed Rate Cash ISA to adult customers, so the infrastructure and regulatory permissions were largely in place. The product can be opened and managed entirely through the OakNorth app or online, with an account-opening time the bank puts at under ten minutes.
The Bubble tie-up

Alongside the product launch, OakNorth has struck a partnership with Bubble, a UK childcare app, offering customers who open a JISA two free hours of babysitting through the platform. Tom Mursell, head of growth at Bubble, described alignment between the two companies’ missions: making childcare and finance more accessible to UK families. The incentive is modest in cash terms, but its logic is clear: the target customer is a working parent with limited time, and a practical, immediate benefit sits more comfortably with that audience than a rate comparison alone.
OakNorth said it is also exploring deeper ties with businesses from its own lending portfolio, which includes nursery groups Storal, Kinderzimmer and ICP Educare, as well as family retailer Mamas & Papas. If those relationships are formalised, the bank could position itself as an embedded financial partner within the broader childcare and family-spending ecosystem, a more defensible distribution moat than rate alone.
Thomas Robinson, product director at OakNorth, pointed to a significant market gap: “85% of young people in the UK don’t currently have a JISA, so there’s huge, untapped potential here.”
Market context
The Junior ISA market in the UK has historically been dominated by established wealth managers, building societies and large retail banks offering stocks-and-shares as well as cash versions of the wrapper. The current JISA annual subscription limit sits at £9,000 per tax year, shared across cash and stocks-and-shares accounts. At 3.5% AER, OakNorth’s rate is competitive in the cash segment, though rates in this market have been adjusting as the Bank of England’s rate cycle turns. Providers including Coventry Building Society and Nationwide have also been active in this segment, and any easing cycle will put pressure on variable-rate cash JISAs across the board.
The regulatory backdrop is straightforward. OakNorth is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA, and the JISA is a well-established, HMRC-administered product with no novel compliance risk attached. The FSCS cover ceiling of £120,000 per child is notably higher than the standard £85,000 adult deposit limit, a detail the bank has chosen to lead with as a trust signal for parents depositing over longer horizons.
The near-term test for OakNorth is whether the Bubble partnership and potential nursery-network distribution channels meaningfully accelerate JISA take-up beyond what a rate-competitive product alone would achieve. If the lending-portfolio partnerships are converted into live distribution deals, the bank will have built a family-finance corridor that is harder for a rate-matching competitor to replicate quickly.
