Xero has launched a connected app for Google Gemini, enabling small businesses, accountants and bookkeepers to query live financial data from within the Gemini interface. The integration, announced on 14 October 2026 from Wellington, allows users to retrieve profit and loss statements, check cash positions, surface overdue invoices and generate visual reports through conversational prompts, without leaving the Gemini environment.

The capability is powered by JAX, Xero’s agentic platform, which maintains a secure, continuously synchronised link between a user’s Xero instance and the Gemini session. Xero confirmed that financial data shared between platforms is used solely within the active session and is not used to train Google’s models, a data governance commitment the company is describing as foundational to the integration.
Diya Jolly, president of product and technology at Xero, said: “Connecting Xero financial data into Gemini conversations helps small businesses and their accountants and bookkeepers instantly check their financial position, track cash flow and manage invoices and bills, all without breaking their workflow.”
What the integration does
The current release covers five functional areas: financial health reporting, sales and receivables tracking, payables management, interactive visual chart generation, and contact and organisation data retrieval. A forthcoming Gemini Tasks feature, described as coming soon for eligible plan tiers, will allow users to build time-based workflows that combine Xero data with other Google Workspace tools such as Gmail, for example automating follow-up sequences on overdue invoices or scheduling daily cash position summaries.
Xero has built a human oversight requirement into any action that modifies financial data. Issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder requires explicit user confirmation before execution, a design choice the company frames under its “Accountable Intelligence” principle. That framing positions the platform as augmenting rather than replacing the accountant or bookkeeper’s judgement.
The Gemini integration extends a series of AI assistant connections Xero has launched in 2026, which already includes Microsoft 365, Anthropic‘s Claude, Claude for Small Business and ChatGPT. A new capability allowing accountants to switch between client organisations across all of these integrations without losing data context is also being introduced alongside the Gemini launch.
Market context
The race to embed accounting and financial management data into AI assistants reflects a broader shift in how software vendors are competing for SMB workflow time. Platforms that can anchor themselves as a trusted data layer inside tools professionals already use, whether that is Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or an LLM chat interface, reduce the daily friction of context switching and deepen switching costs at the same time.
Xero’s claim to be the first financial management platform to launch a connected app for Gemini is notable given the competitive pressure in cloud accounting. Rivals including Intuit’s QuickBooks and Sage also have active AI development programmes and their own integrations with major productivity suites. The pace at which Xero has connected to multiple LLM environments in a single year suggests that distribution through AI assistants is now a primary commercial priority, not an experimental add-on.
From a regulatory standpoint, the integration raises practical questions about data residency and audit trail integrity for accountants operating under professional standards obligations in the UK and EU. Xero’s session-only data commitment addresses the training-data concern directly, but advisors working under GDPR and ICAEW or FRC practice rules will still need to satisfy themselves that live financial data flowing into a third-party AI environment meets their client confidentiality requirements. Xero has not published a detailed technical data-flow document in the release.
