Checkout.com gains Georgia bank charter to expand in US

Checkout.com, a global digital payments provider, has secured regulatory approval for a Merchant Acquirer Limited Purpose Bank charter in Georgia, a move that accelerates its US expansion and positions the company for full charter banking operations in 2026.

The company confirmed it has received approval for its Merchant Acquirer Limited Purpose Bank (MALPB) charter from the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. The approval represents a critical regulatory milestone, enabling Checkout.com to move from planning to operational execution as it prepares to operate its own MALPB in the US market.

Securing the charter allows Checkout.com to accelerate plans to become its own acquirer in the US. Direct integration with US card networks will give the company greater control over the payments stack, supporting faster innovation, superior acceptance rates and improved performance for merchants operating in the domestic market.

Checkout.com is among the first global payment providers to complete the MALPB approval process, it said. The charter underpins a significant expansion of North American operations, anchored by a new strategic hub in Atlanta, alongside existing offices in New York and San Francisco.

Checkout.com MALPB CEO and head of North American banking Jordan Reynolds said, “With our MALPB charter now approved, the ‘definitive catalyst’ we identified in October is officially activated. This milestone paves the way for a new era of payment performance.

“Our focus is now on scaling our infrastructure and building up talent in Atlanta and the US to meet the rigorous conditions of our approval. We are on track toward full charter banking operations in 2026, doubling down on our commitment to provide US enterprise merchants with the performance and reliability they demand.”
