Hippodrome Casino has selected RiskSmart to strengthen its risk and assurance framework, marking a significant step in its approach to governance and compliance.
The venue, one of London’s most iconic entertainment destinations, is the latest gambling operator to adopt the GRC platform, claims RiskSmart.
The casino, which sits in a Grade II listed building in Leicester Square, carries a long history of entertainment. Its stage has seen legendary performances from Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini, Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey, as well as Prince’s final London show. Following a £50m renovation in 2012, the Hippodrome was relaunched as a modern casino offering a broad mix of gaming, theatre, and dining experiences.
Beneath the glamour, the casino has been working to raise the bar on compliance. Earlier this year, Matt Harding was appointed as director of assurance to spearhead the shift from a reactive compliance model to a proactive and demonstrable framework. Harding explained, “We’re an industry-leading casino that welcomes 1.6 million customers through the door every year. Historically, our governance structures weren’t as robust as they could be. We were always doing what was expected of us by the regulator, but without having the solid framework to evidence and continuously improve our processes.”
As part of Harding’s remit, the casino began searching for technology that could support the design of an assurance roadmap, conduct thematic reviews and identify risks before they escalate. The reliance on spreadsheets and manual methods was no longer sustainable in an industry under growing regulatory scrutiny.
After months of evaluating solutions, the Hippodrome team chose RiskSmart. The decision, according to Harding, was not only about technology but also about the collaborative relationship offered by the provider. “It felt like we’d have a voice. With larger vendors, we’d have been a small fish in a big pond. With RiskSmart, we can grow together,” he said.
