PayPal launches AI scam alerts for secure payments

PayPal, a global leader in digital payments and commerce solutions, has introduced a new AI-powered scam alert system for Friends and Family transactions across its PayPal and Venmo platforms.

The launch aims to enhance fraud protection for users sending money in personal transactions, particularly vulnerable to social engineering scams.

The launch of the new dynamic alert system comes in response to the increasing sophistication of scammers targeting peer-to-peer (P2P) payments. These scams often involve coercion or manipulation through social media, where individuals are deceived into sending money under false pretences, often in ways that are not eligible for refunds. By proactively informing users at the point of payment, PayPal seeks to empower its customers and minimise potential losses.

PayPal provides digital payment services to millions of individuals and businesses worldwide, offering secure platforms for online transactions, money transfers, and digital commerce. It also owns Venmo, a popular U.S.-based P2P payment app widely used for casual transactions between friends and family.

The newly launched feature actively scans for scam indicators in real time, issuing tailored alerts when suspicious behaviour is detected. These alerts intervene before any funds are sent, offering contextual warnings that highlight the risk level of the transaction. Alerts can become progressively stricter if the system gains more confidence that the payment is fraudulent.

PayPal’s dynamic system is driven by AI models that analyse billions of data points to detect and adapt to evolving fraud tactics. The machine learning-based approach allows the system to identify new scam patterns—even those it hasn’t previously encountered—providing a more responsive and personalised layer of defence.

Unlike generic, static warnings, the alerts are customised to reflect the specific risk associated with each transaction. For high-risk scenarios, the system adds friction to the payment process or automatically declines it altogether, maximising user protection.

The new alerts are now live globally across PayPal’s markets and are also active throughout the U.S. on the Venmo platform.

PayPal emphasised its broader anti-fraud strategy as multi-pronged, combining cutting-edge technology, expert-led research, and continual updates to risk controls.
