As collateral management grows increasingly complex under rising margin requirements and tightening regulatory mandates, financial institutions are facing intense pressure to reduce operational risk and improve workflow efficiency. Addressing these operational friction points, enterprise financial software provider Smartstream has launched two new Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for its flagship Smart Collateral platform.
The architectural release enables dynamic, agentic collateral operations by allowing global financial institutions to connect any MCP-compatible AI assistant directly to their underlying collateral engine. Through natural language conversations, operations teams can query complex datasets and execute controlled workflow automations while maintaining native risk governance.
Eliminating Data Silos with Open Standards

Traditionally, during periods of heightened market volatility, collateral management teams must navigate multiple systems, screens, and static reports to assemble a clear view of positions, margin calls, and eligibility criteria. This manual data gathering introduces delays and increases operational risk.
By implementing an open, standards-based MCP framework, Smartstream allows institutions to utilize existing, internally approved AI assistants rather than locking them into a closed, proprietary vendor ecosystem. The infrastructure gives teams immediate conversational access to collateral agreements, positions, margin activity, and interest calculations.
“Collateral teams spend too much of their day hunting for answers and writing integration code,” stated Jason Ang, program manager for Smart Collateral at Smartstream. “These MCP servers let firms point an AI assistant of their choosing straight at Smart Collateral, interrogating reporting data on demand, operating the integration APIs and, only where they choose to enable it, acting under their control… It is an open, standards-based approach that keeps our clients in charge of their data, their workflows and their governance.”
Dual-Server Security Architecture
Smartstream’s deployment separates administrative and reporting functions into two distinct MCP servers to preserve security and data integrity:
-
API Integration Server: Converts Smart Collateral’s core integration APIs into an actionable toolset for AI assistants. The server enables pre-validation of proposed movements against concentration and eligibility rules prior to execution. Crucially, all write actions—such as creating movements or issuing margin calls—are disabled by default and must be explicitly opted into by each institution.
-
Read-Only Reporting Server: Connects AI assistants directly to the platform’s reporting database. This allows analysts to query operational metrics in plain language, receive instant synthesized answers, and assemble custom dashboards on demand without manually pulling multiple reports.
Beyond frontline operational benefits, the dual-server architecture supports internal software engineering teams. Developers can leverage the assistants to rapidly prototype reconciliation routines, generate exception-handling scripts, and scaffold integration code, subject to standard enterprise review and deployment protocols.
Strengthening Control in Collateral Operations
Smartstream’s Smart Collateral platform provides financial institutions with end-to-end control, visibility, and governance across the complete margin lifecycle. By shipping domain-specific collateral skills alongside the new MCP tools, Smartstream ensures that AI assistants natively understand complex industry workflows out of the box.
As capital markets transition into the agentic AI era, the deployment provides financial institutions with a scalable pathway to reduce back-office friction, accelerate system integration, and make faster, data-backed decisions.
