For decades, compliance has relied on static rules, watchlists and retrospective checks, creating growing volumes of noise while critical risks slip through the cracks. As regulatory complexity accelerates, a new generation of AI agents is beginning to transform the function by moving beyond automation to introduce reasoning, context and continuous intelligence. Acting more like digital investigators than rules engines, these agents connect disparate data, interpret evolving risk signals and explain their conclusions in regulator-ready terms, signalling a shift from checklist-driven compliance to a more proactive, insight-led model.
Compliance processes that deliver the highest ROI are also the ones seeing the fastest automation, according to Supradeep Appikonda, COO and co-founder of 4CRisk.ai.
High-volume, text-heavy workflows—like Regulatory Change Management programs—are prime candidates for AI, where NLP and machine learning can scan, analyze, and detect changes across thousands of rules, standards, legal rulings, and guidance documents in minutes, compared with days or weeks for human teams.
Yet, Appikonda stresses that automation is not about removing humans entirely. “We are seeing about 80% automation, balanced with 20% ‘Human in the Loop’ at critical points, where professionals weigh in on what makes sense, and what doesn’t,” he says.
Transparency and accountability, he notes, hinge on carefully structured human oversight. AI agents should automate processes step by step, pausing to provide links to sources or explanations for their results. Using curated, small specialized language models (SLMs) built on authoritative sources can further reduce bias, improve speed and accuracy, and enhance trust. “Human oversight, with clearly laid out ‘Human in the Loop’ steps, that provide the ability to vote, is especially important when using AI Agents,” Appikonda adds.
AI-driven compliance tools are proving their value beyond efficiency gains. When deployed thoughtfully, they can highlight gaps in policies, procedures, and controls tied to key risks, allowing firms to reduce overall risk scores faster and improve resilience.
Conversely, if AI is applied to isolated steps without integrating into the broader risk context, the end-to-end process may see little improvement.
As AI handles routine work, compliance professionals are developing new capabilities, particularly in leveraging generative AI and agentic systems to streamline processes while embedding oversight.
Appikonda says, “Professionals are looking at how to use AI at the right stage to collapse manual effort, and where to ensure human oversight is embedded to ensure the right level of accountability, explainability and trustworthiness.” The role of compliance is shifting toward managing AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement, combining technical acumen with judgment and governance.
Day-to-day changes
Over the last few years, countless new tools have entered the compliance ecosystem, but Vall Herard, CEO of Saifr, says nothing has transformed the day-to-day reality of compliance work as rapidly as AI agents. “We’re no longer talking about simple automation,” he explains. “We’re talking about software that can observe, interpret, and act based on context, not just keywords.” In practical terms, AI agents are creating capacity for compliance teams buried under volumes of documents, communications, and evolving rules, rather than replacing expertise altogether.
Herard foresees multi-agent models driving the next wave of change. “The adoption of multi-agent integration to solve brittle manual workflows in AML, KYC, fraud, and more will continue,” he says. These systems can split complex processes into specialized tasks, balancing automation with human judgment and allowing teams to focus on interpretation rather than data gathering. AI can scan, correlate, and summarize across channels and datasets, surfacing patterns that would take humans far longer to detect.
Transparency and accountability remain central to adoption. For Herard, the focus isn’t on exposing every line of code but on practical explanations that users can understand and challenge. “Practical explanations and reflective frameworks rather than full explainability will reduce the ‘black box’ nature of AI.
This will lead to more trust and more adoption,” he notes. Institutions are increasingly seeking technology partners that let systems operate on real client data before production, providing insight into live behavior rather than relying on narrow academic-style benchmarks. Herard argues that the future of evaluation will resemble human performance assessments, using composite scores across accuracy, ethical considerations, safety, and other metrics to capture a balanced view of judgment and consistency.
Looking forward, AI will act as a continuous intelligence layer beneath compliance operations, enabling teams to spend their time on judgment, ethical reasoning, and context rather than rote work.
As Herard summarizes: “AI agents handle the volume; humans handle the decisions. Together, they create a future that is both scalable and more grounded in human judgement than anything the industry has relied on before.” In this vision, the next era of compliance is defined by the integration of sophisticated AI capabilities with careful human oversight, improving risk management while making the work of compliance professionals more effective and rewarding.
Taking over tasks
AI is gradually taking on compliance tasks that were once outsourced to third parties or contract workers, but Alex Mercer, Head of Innovation Lab at Zeidler Group, stresses that human oversight remains critical. “Even processes that have been largely automated still usually hinge on a human touch at either the final decision stage, or the initial process determination stage,” he explains.
While small components of larger processes are being successfully automated, Mercer cautions against fully removing human review, noting that every process should at least get a glance from an expert.
Transparency and accountability, he says, are the biggest challenges with agentic systems. LLM-based AI lacks inherent transparency, and while robust logging and output reviews can provide a sufficient level of oversight, they cannot fully explain how a model reached a particular decision. Mercer recommends assigning human owners to oversee specific AI processes, much like supervising a junior analyst or contractor.
“Having a member of a team become a subject matter expert in the specific agent process makes it easier to triage issues and identify shortcomings that automated reporting may miss,” he says. He also warns against relying on agents to oversee other agents without humans in the loop, noting that current technology isn’t accurate enough for fully autonomous operations.
On outcomes, Mercer observes that AI tools are improving risk management in areas that were previously overlooked, especially for smaller firms that lacked the bandwidth to consistently follow compliance requirements. “AI-driven tools have enabled these firms to complete tasks that may have previously been relegated to ‘we will get to it eventually’ to ‘we are getting it done now,’” he says. In more mature, regulator-tested setups, AI primarily streamlines processes rather than dramatically improving risk outcomes.
Looking forward, Mercer sees the emphasis for compliance professionals returning to critical thinking. “AI is enabling smaller teams to take on tasks that previously were daunting or outside the scope of work, but a lot of that still depends on having skilled compliance experts guiding the processes,” he notes.
He expects training to focus less on rote process execution and more on understanding the underlying “why” behind compliance issues, ensuring that human judgment remains at the center of an increasingly AI-assisted workflow.
Ineffective AML
According to Cleverchain, traditional AML systems, built around static watchlists and shared datasets, are increasingly ineffective. These tools generate large volumes of false positives while still missing emerging risks that fall outside formal sanctions or PEP lists, creating a growing compliance blind spot. In contrast, agentic AI shifts the focus from name matching to contextual understanding.
The firm said that acting more like digital investigators than rules engines, AI agents autonomously gather and connect evidence from structured and unstructured sources, reason across jurisdictions and languages, and assess who an entity is, how they are connected, and why they may present risk — even when no watchlist entry exists.
By embedding reasoning and context into decision-making, agentic AML dramatically reduces both false positives and false negatives and delivers fewer, higher-confidence alerts.
Crucially, the firm notes, these systems produce explainable, regulator-ready narratives that show how conclusions were reached, supported by traceable evidence logs and clear audit trails.
Cleverchain sees AI agents as a catalyst for transforming compliance from a reactive, checklist-driven function into a proactive intelligence capability, enabling faster decisions, broader risk coverage, and stronger regulatory defensibility.
The early days
AI agents are still in their early days in compliance, but they are already showing where they can add the most value.
Areg Nzsdejan, CEO at Cardamon, points out that the “low-hanging fruit” tends to be tasks involving structured data with clear outcomes, such as identifying whether a regulatory passage applies. Interestingly, he notes, preparing that data for agents can be more labor-intensive than the review itself. Human oversight, he adds, remains essential in most use cases—much like the familiar practice of a four-eye check on critical workflows.
For Nzsdejan, transparency and accountability hinge on auditability and explainability. “Imagine you have a human conducting a KYC check or doing horizon scanning—if they don’t give their rationale, their manager faces the same issue as if an AI Agent doesn’t show its working out,” he says.
At Cardamon, every agent is required to provide a rationale for each decision, with that reasoning exposed to customers. A robust quality-control process and hard metrics further allow organisations to gauge how much they can rely on automated outputs, much like trusting a seasoned colleague versus a less experienced one.
When it comes to outcomes, Nzsdejan argues that AI-driven tools are doing more than speeding up processes—they can enhance risk management. By automating tasks such as obligation mapping, firms can cover every applicable regulation instead of focusing only on high-risk areas, improving both completeness and accuracy. Looking ahead, he anticipates a shift in skill requirements.
“The concept of Compliance Engineers will emerge,” Nzsdejan predicts, where compliance professionals learn to tailor agents and orchestrate heavy-lifting tasks—essentially learning to communicate with AI agents as they would with colleagues.
Compliance-first
While the industry talks increasingly about AI agents, Blanca Barthe, Head of Product Marketing at Napier AI, argues that most so-called agents in today’s AML technology are still little more than workflow automation.
Built on human-defined steps and deterministic triggers, they can move tasks along more quickly, she says, but “they do not truly reason, adapt, or balance competing compliance priorities”.
Looking ahead, Barthe sees a more mature form of agentic AI emerging as an intelligent partner to compliance teams. In this model, systems would dynamically prioritise alerts, identify connections across cases and autonomously test new detection scenarios within secure environments. Investigations could be managed end to end within defined parameters, with every action and decision automatically recorded for audit review.
Crucially, this evolution is not about replacing analysts. Instead, these systems would learn continuously from human feedback, steadily improving detection accuracy and operational consistency.
As these capabilities develop, Barthe stresses that their use in regulated areas such as AML must be rooted in governance, transparency and accountability.
A compliance-first approach, she argues, is essential to ensure innovation builds regulatory confidence rather than undermining it. That shift will also place new demands on people. Compliance professionals will need a stronger understanding of how models work, how to interpret their outputs, and how to recognise when those outputs may be flawed.
Fast automation
As AI agents become more deeply embedded in compliance operations, Rick Grashel, co-founder and chief technology officer at Red Oak, points to the pre-review stage as the area seeing the fastest automation. AI is increasingly handling the first-pass review to detect potential compliance issues, before handing cases over to human reviewers. In parallel, the role of the compliance professional is shifting.
Rather than focusing on initial screening, human expertise is being concentrated on remediation and final review, where judgement and accountability remain critical.
For Grashel, ensuring transparency and accountability in this model starts with clarity of intent and process. Firms must be able to answer fundamental questions: what the AI agent was asked to do, what information it was given, what outputs were requested, and what internal audit processes are in place to ensure the agent is adhering to those instructions. “You must have all of these in place to ensure your firm is accountable and transparent,” he says, emphasising that governance is as important as the technology itself.
The impact of AI, Grashel argues, goes beyond simply speeding up legacy workflows. AI-driven compliance tools are both accelerating processes and improving risk management outcomes, with faster detection that delivers higher-value insights than before.
As routine work is absorbed by machines, new skills will become essential. Compliance professionals will need to understand how to communicate effectively with AI models and agents, from crafting quality prompts to knowing what information to provide. Those who lean into AI and learn how to manage and collaborate with these systems, Grashel concludes, will be best positioned to succeed in the next phase of compliance.
Making fast gains
AI agents are beginning to fundamentally reshape compliance operations by absorbing the most repetitive and time-consuming work that once demanded large teams.
Tim Khamzin, CEO and founder of Vivox AI, points to sanctions and adverse-media screening, KYB onboarding, enhanced due diligence and transaction-monitoring alerts as the areas seeing the fastest gains, where automation can significantly cut false positives and compress processes that previously took hours or even days.
Despite these efficiencies, Khamzin is clear that human oversight remains essential.
Regulations still require final, high-impact decisions to sit with experienced compliance professionals, even as market appetite grows for low-risk, low-value transactions to move through “autopilot mode”. In this model, autonomous agents handle scale and volume, while human teams concentrate on judgement-based escalation work.
To make that shift viable, transparency and accountability must be built in from the outset. Every decision needs to be explainable, auditable and reproducible, supported by clear policies, detailed instructions, continuous feedback loops and rigorous governance. Khamzin stresses that agents should always be run in parallel with human reviewers before going live, only moving into production once accuracy and reasoning quality are consistently proven.
Beyond speed, Khamzin argues that AI is actively enhancing risk management. Modern agentic systems can process and cleanse vast volumes of unstructured data, uncovering insights and risk signals that would be difficult for human teams to identify manually, strengthening both effectiveness and defensibility in regulated environments.
As routine workloads are absorbed by machines, the compliance profession itself will evolve. Future teams, he suggests, will be far more tech-savvy, focused on supervising and calibrating AI agents, evaluating precision and accuracy metrics, and training systems to reflect institutional policies — freeing human expertise for the deep, complex investigations where judgement remains irreplaceable.
Taking over repetitive work
AI agents are steadily absorbing the repetitive tasks that have traditionally slowed compliance teams down, from collecting evidence and enriching alerts with external data, to routing cases, drafting first-pass narratives and monitoring regulatory feeds for change.
According to Baran Ozkan, CEO at Flagright, what remains firmly human is judgment. “Setting risk appetite, interpreting intent in edge cases, speaking to a customer in distress, and deciding when to escalate are leadership calls, not model outputs,” he says.
For Ozkan, transparency and accountability are not achieved through slogans, but through deliberate design choices. Every automated action should be traceable, carrying clear reason codes, feature attributions and data lineage, alongside a recorded human checkpoint where it matters. With that scaffolding in place, AI can do more than accelerate existing workflows.
It can reduce false positives, surface risk earlier in the process and shrink the time to filing. As a result, the compliance skill set is evolving, blending traditional investigative craft with model literacy, data quality stewardship, scenario design and control-as-code capabilities.
At Flagright, Ozkan notes, the focus is on building agents that “explain themselves, keep a tamper-proof audit trail, and hand control back to analysts in seconds when a decision needs human judgment.”
Reshaping compliance
AI agents are increasingly reshaping the day-to-day reality of compliance, taking on the repetitive and time-sensitive work that once consumed teams’ attention, while allowing specialists to concentrate on complex judgment calls and higher-value strategic decisions.
As Sebastian Hetzler, co-CEO at IMTF, puts it, the challenge is no longer about replacing humans, but “enhancing their capabilities through collaboration between people and technology,” with transparency and accountability remaining central to that relationship.
A clear illustration of this shift can be seen in AI-driven alert triage. By automatically prioritising cases using risk indicators and historical patterns, institutions are able to resolve routine alerts more quickly, while investigators focus their efforts on genuinely suspicious activity.
For Hetzler, this only works if explainability is built in. Compliance teams need to understand why a model has reached a particular decision so they can validate it, challenge it and ultimately trust it. The heavy lifting
AI is increasingly taking on the heavy lifting in compliance, from pattern recognition and document review to monitoring large volumes of data.
But Ryan Swann, founder and CRO of RiskSmart, cautions that automation can only go so far. “Compliance isn’t just about what the data says; it’s about why it matters,” he explains. Human expertise remains essential for context, judgment, and ethical interpretation, ensuring that decisions reflect more than just the numbers.
Swann stresses that transparency and accountability must stay firmly in human hands. “You can’t outsource accountability. Even when AI makes a call, humans must remain in the loop, not just to validate outcomes, but to explain them,” he says. For him, the value of AI lies not in speed alone, but in depth. “The best AI isn’t about speed for speed’s sake. When done right, automation doesn’t just make you faster, it makes you smarter.”
As routine tasks are absorbed by machines, the role of the compliance professional is evolving. Swann envisions a new focus on interpretation and oversight. “Curiosity and critical thinking. As AI handles the admin, compliance pros will become data interpreters and ethical guardians. It’s less box-ticking, more big-picture thinking,” he says, highlighting a shift toward deeper analysis, ethical judgment, and strategic insight.
