Icon Solutions Founders Receive King’s Award at Buckingham Palace

Icon Solutions, the UK payments infrastructure company, has received a King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category. Co-founders Tom Kelleher and Darren Capehorn attended a reception at Buckingham Palace to collect the award from His Majesty The King, joining business leaders from across the UK recognised under the programme.

The award specifically recognised the Icon Payments Framework (IPF) and its contribution to the evolution of banking payments infrastructure. The company was founded in 2009 and counts Citi, NatWest, UBS and BNP Paribas among the Tier 1 banks that have deployed the framework.

What IPF does

IPF is positioned as a payments development framework that allows banks to build, test and deploy payments processing solutions in-house rather than relying on a third-party systems integrator for each change. The company says the framework lets institutions control their own timelines and costs while accelerating transformation of core payments infrastructure. That proposition targets a persistent pain point: large banks have historically been locked into long, expensive upgrade cycles on legacy payment engines, making it difficult to adopt new schemes or messaging standards at pace.

Market context

The King’s Award for Enterprise is one of the most prominent government-backed business honours in the UK, assessed by an independent advisory committee and ultimately approved by the sovereign. In the payments technology sector, it carries reputational weight with both public-sector procurement teams and the compliance functions of large financial institutions, which increasingly treat vendor credibility as a due-diligence input.

Icon Solutions operates in a segment that has attracted significant investment and consolidation pressure over the past several years. Banks seeking to modernise payment rails, migrate to ISO 20022 messaging, or meet real-time payment scheme requirements in multiple jurisdictions have driven demand for frameworks that reduce dependency on bespoke custom development. Several large consultancies and specialist payment software vendors compete for the same Tier 1 mandates, making recognised innovation credentials a meaningful differentiator in lengthy procurement processes.

The award also arrives at a point when UK financial services policy is emphasising the importance of domestic fintech capability.
