Marqeta has announced its latest collaboration with Klarna, introducing a new debit card for the US market powered by Visa Flexible Credential (VFC). The launch extends their long-standing partnership and aims to give Klarna’s customers more control over how and when they pay.
The Klarna Card, which is currently being piloted in the US, enables users to choose between paying immediately or deferring payments, all through a single card. This functionality is made possible by Marqeta’s platform, which became the first issuer processor in the US certified for Visa Flexible Credential in July 2024. A broader rollout across the US is expected later this year.
Marqeta chief product and engineering officer Rahul Shah said, “The future of payments is flexible, and we’re proud to enable this new offering together with Visa. Our ongoing partnership with Klarna is a true testament to what’s possible with Marqeta’s platform and how we enable our customers to grow and innovate at global scale.”
The partnership builds on years of collaboration between Marqeta and Klarna. Since 2018, Marqeta has powered Klarna’s virtual cards in the US, supporting the digital bank’s growth and helping it introduce innovative payment products tailored to changing consumer demands.
Klarna chief marketing officer David Sandström said, “Through our continued partnership with Marqeta and Visa, we’re evolving the Klarna Card into a truly dynamic and versatile payment experience. We’re excited to continue innovating alongside Marqeta as we scale the Klarna Card to provide smart, seamless payments that empower smarter, more informed shoppers everywhere.”
Klarna, which has established itself as a global digital bank and flexible payments provider, boasts over 100 million active users worldwide, processing 2.9 million transactions daily. Its AI-powered payments network offers consumers flexible payment options both online and in-store, including integrations with Apple Pay across the US, UK and Canada. Klarna’s services are trusted by over 724,000 global retailers, including Uber, H&M, Saks, Sephora, Macy’s, Ikea, Expedia Group, Nike and Airbnb.
