UK financial technology provider Kord has officially launched the UK’s first dedicated legal sort code—04-10-26—marking a structural upgrade to how law firms, conveyancers, and estate agents execute high-value client transactions. Designed to decouple legal settlements from legacy banking hours, the specialized payment network, Kord Custody, enables instant, 24/7 fund transfers while introducing embedded counterparty verification to combat payment fraud.
The new sort code—whose numerical sequence reflects its official Sunday, October 4th launch—provides a dedicated, regulated payment standard for the UK legal sector. By restricting network access exclusively to regulated firms that have completed Kord’s onboarding and compliance verification, the infrastructure ensures that solicitors and conveyancers can verify counterparty account ownership prior to transmitting client funds.
Overcoming Operational Bottlenecks and Fraud Risk

For decades, UK property conveyancing and commercial legal settlements have relied on generalized clearing infrastructure. High-value transfers frequently occur under strict deadline pressure—most notably on Friday afternoons—when limited bank visibility into underlying legal transactions creates severe operational friction. These structural delays have historically exposed law firms and home buyers to “Friday afternoon fraud,” where cybercriminals intercept unverified payment details during high-pressure settlement windows.
By uniting payment execution with pre-transaction verification, Kord Custody allows participating firms to execute transfers instantly at any time, including weekends and bank holidays.
“Buying a home or settling a major commercial matter should not depend on whether a bank is open,” stated James Owusu, CEO and founder of Kord. “This launch marks the moment that legal transactions leave banking hours behind. Crucially, it provides enhanced security alongside greater operational efficiency. Fraudsters often exploit uncertainty, but our settlement network embeds trust and verification into each transaction, helping end Friday afternoon fraud.”
Multi-Rail Flexibility and Safeguarded Architecture
Client funds moving through the 04-10-26 sort code are strictly safeguarded with ClearBank in accordance with Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) safeguarding regulations. Built to serve estate and letting agents, conveyancers, law firms, and financial institutions, Kord Custody integrates across both domestic clearing rails and modern digital wallets.
Supported payment rails include:
-
Domestic Clearing Systems: Full settlement compatibility across Faster Payments, CHAPS, and BACS.
-
Card and Digital Wallet Rails: Native support for debit and credit card processing alongside digital wallets, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.
“Kord Custody sits alongside Kord’s existing client verification (Checkboard), eligibility (Kord Data), and secure payments (Kord Pay) propositions, supplying the missing link to law firms to enable high-value transactions, backed up by a full audit,” noted Steve Carle, Kord board director appointed by Guinness Ventures. “This gives our customers a full service offering which is unique in the market, providing them with the assurance that money is moving safely and securely from one correct account to another.”
“Client money sits at the centre of a law firm’s risk, and the infrastructure managing it hasn’t kept pace with regulation,” added Kiu Kim, investment director at Beringea and board director at Kord. “Kord Custody removes that risk at source rather than insuring against it after the fact, and is the kind of category-defining product we backed Kord to build.”
By combining 24/7 instant availability with strict counterparty verification, Kord is establishing a purpose-built financial rail designed specifically to protect and accelerate the UK’s legal economy.
