Thunes Launches Real-Time Payment Services Into Morocco

Global payments infrastructure company Thunes has launched a real-time payments service into Morocco. The move enables members of its Direct Global Network to send payouts in Moroccan Dirham (MAD) directly to bank accounts within the country.

The company says the expansion gives its network members greater access to Morocco’s increasingly digitised economy and aims to meet growing consumer demand for faster and more transparent cross-border payments.

The launch targets one of Africa’s top remittance destinations. According to data from the World Bank cited by Thunes, Morocco received over $11.5billion in personal remittances in 2023, highlighting the significant volume of cross-border payments flowing into the country.

Thunes also pointed to its own research to underscore the demand for faster payment services. The company’s ‘2025 Report: Money Without Borders’ found that 65 per cent of expatriates prioritise speed above all other factors when selecting a payment method. Direct connections into the Moroccan banking network are designed to provide faster and more transparent transactions compared to legacy systems.

Expansion plans

Aik Boon Tan, chief network officer at Thunes, said: “As the demand for seamless, real-time cross-border payments into North Africa continues to grow, Thunes is committed to offering fast and reliable alternatives to legacy systems. This latest expansion of our Direct Global Network into Morocco marks an important milestone for Thunes and our Members around the world, giving them the opportunity to truly enhance the speed of their consumer and business cross-border payments.”

Chloé Mayenobe, president and chief operating officer at Thunes, also added: “Speed has become more than a preference in cross-border payments, it’s an expectation and a key factor for end users when choosing a solution. With the launch of direct payouts into Morocco, we’re giving our Members the power to deliver faster, cheaper, and more transparent transactions into one of Africa’s most vital markets.”

Thunes’ Direct Global Network enables its members to make payments in real-time in over 130 countries and more than 80 currencies. The network connects to mobile wallets, bank accounts, and cards through over 320 different payment methods. The company stated that the expansion into Morocco supports its mission to foster greater financial inclusion for those sending money into the country.
